Introduction

The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) has developed web accessibility guidelines with technical specifications, and educational resources to help make the web accessible and thereby fulfill the requirements of Web Accessibility Directive (WAD).

Web accessibility is regulated in the Web Accessibility Directive (WAD), that states that public sector websites and mobile apps must be accessible.

What is web accessibility?

Web accessibility means that websites, apps, tools and technologies are developed and designed to be use by everyone – including people with auditory, visual, physical or other disabilities.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provides technical specifications to improve the accessibility of web content, websites and web applications on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and mobile devices for people with a wide range of disabilities. For public sector websites, compliance to the standard WCAG 2.1 AA is required.

Who WCAG is for

WCAG is primarily intended for:

  • Web content developers (page authors, site designers, etc.)

  • Web authoring tool developers

  • Web accessibility evaluation tool developers

  • Others who want or need a standard for web accessibility, including for mobile accessibility

Related resources are intended to meet the needs of many different people, including policy makers, managers, researchers, and others.
